Sandy Lo signs copies of "Dream Catchers" at Starbucks in Hauppauge
A Hauppauge author is signing copies of her second novel at Starbucks on Route 111, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sandy Lo has self-published her second novel "Dream Catchers," the second book in as many years. The book tells a tale of self-discovery wrapped around a rock band's journey.
"I've always wanted to be a rock star, but I have absolutely no musical talent," Lo said. "So this is my way of doing it."
The 369-page fictional novel features Haley, a wealthy college student from Vermont who is pursuing pre-law degree to please her parents at a New York City college. On a bus trip home for the summer, Hailey suddenly finds herself left behind at a rest stop with a musician, Jordan, who tempts her to spend an adventurous week in New York City.
"It's very different from anything else I've ever written," Lo said.
The author, a recent transplant from Staten Island, said she began writing stories when she was 12, completing her first novel at 17. Lo founded Starshine Magazine, writing about celebrities and music, before self-publishing her first novel "Lost In You" in 2009 through the lulu.com
Lo said both her books are focused towards a young adult audience, but have carried a universal theme with wider appeal.
"Anyone who can relate to ever growing up and finding who you are can enjoy my books," she said.
The theme of self-discovery is on Lo said she relates to herself, feeling she's grown and changed a great deal since high school, and an exploratory process she wants to encourage others on.
"I feel not enough people explore all sides of themselves, because they settle down or bury their feelings," Lo said.
Her vivacious personality and passion for living live to its fullest continues to motivate her to write. Lo is already planning a third book, the sequel to "Dream Catchers" and a supernatural series to follow, whether she lands a publishing agent or not.
"I want to share my joy with others people," Lo said. "Whether I sell 10 books or 50,000, I'm still happy to be writing."
Both of Lo's books, "Lost In You" and "Dream Catchers" are available on lulu.com and amazon.com. A song from "Dream Catchers" inspired by the fictional rock band called "Haley's letter" is available on iTunes.
