Hauppauge Library Launches Foreign Film Fridays

Three films will be show on biweekly basis as part of Suffolk County's "One World, Many Stories" summer reading program.

The is launching a new series Foreign Film series this Friday for adults.

The three-part series aims to introduce adults to foreign films as part of Suffolk County's theme "One World, Many Stories" for its summer reading programs.

"We incorporated a three-part series of foreign films," said Fran Palumbo, a librarian at Hauppauge Public Library. "They are not so easy to see. We are showing the films because of the program, but it would make people interested in watching foreign films, different movies."

The series starts with "The Secret in Their Eyes" by Juan Jose Campanella. Filmed in Argentia, the movie tells the story of a retired criminal court employee who pulls from his life experience to write his first novel, and finds himself drawn into finding justice for an unsolved murder case. The film won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign language Film and won 2 Goya Awards for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film and Best New Actress.

On July 29, the library will screen "Biutiful" by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu in 2010. Movie watchers follow the life of Uxbal, a man on the wrong side of the law, who struggles to provide for the children on the streets of Barcelona. It was nominated for two Academy Awards in 2011.

Palumbo said Biutiful is a new addition to the Hauppauge Public Library's foreign film collection, and is also available to patrons to borrow.

The three film shown will be "Bridge and Prejudice" on Aug. 12, which puts a Bollywood twist on Jane Austen's classic novel "Pride and Prejudice." This is an Indian film where a women sets out to find marriage matches for her four daughters.

Each movie will begin at 2 p.m on Fridays, and registration is required in person or through the library's website.
