Police Report: Welfare Fraud, $50k Grand Larceny, Forged Checks

Weekly police blotter of crime activity in Hauppauge from the Suffolk Police Public Information Office.

The following information is taken from the Suffolk County Police Department's Media Incident list for the Fourth Precinct. The following individuals are not convicted of a crime, but have been arrested on the charges. Defendants are considered innocent until convicted or proven guilty. These are the arrested and incidents from Feb. 22 – Feb. 28.

Arrests:

Mirtha Gil, 47, of Rocky Point, was arrested Feb. 28 at 4:42 p.m. in Hauppauge for computer trespassing. Police said Gil accessed the Southside Hospital computer system and stole patient information. Gil was arrested at the North County Complex in Hauppauge.

Ricky Saunders, 53, of Bayshore, was arrested Feb. 25 in Hauppauge for forged instrument and false sworn statement. On June 14, 2010 Saunders forged a check in an amount over $4,500, according to police reports. Police also said Saunders gave false information in a sworn statement but would not comment any further. 

Karen Dixon, 47, of Hauppauge, was arrested in Hauppauge at midnight for intent to damage property. Police said Dixon was in the Smith Haven Mall parking lot on Feb. 16 when she reportedly took a ratchet and threw it at a 1994 Nissan Centra shattering the back window.

Fernando Alvarez, 57, of West Babylon, was arrested in Hauppauge Feb.24 at 9:30 a.m. for grand larceny. Police said Alvarez stole over $50,000 in cash between Sept. 21 and  Sept. 29, 2006. Alvarez was arrested on Veterans Highway. 

Patricia Cardenaz, 31, of Selden, was arrested in Hauppauge on Feb. 23 for welfare fraud. Police said Cardenaz reported her husband's employer as her own. At the time, she was also receiving child care payments from New York state.

Jaclyn Romero, 25, from Nesconset, was arrested in Hauppauge Feb. 22 at 10:30 p.m. for acting in an inappropriate manner for a child under 17. Police said Romero left her 5-year-old child home alone on Feb. 21. The child eventually walked out of the residence and knocked on a neighbor's door. When the police arrived, they allegedly found the home empty and later arrested Romero.
