Buffalo Pizza Combines Two Football Party Classics

Review of Branchinelli's Buffalo Chicken Pizza proves students know their pizza.

Branchinelli's pizzeria is a mainstay in Hauppauge, and its Buffalo Chicken pizza proves why.

Hauppauge High School alumni were quick to offer up Branchinelli's buffalo chicken pizza as one of their favorite slices around town. Located directly across from the high school and middle school, the pizzeria is easily accessible and long-time neighborhood favorite off Route 111. Some residents say if you order a slice and sit at the counter on Friday nights, you're sure to run into a neighbor or two.

As the New York Jets head to the American Football Conference Championship, it was time to taste test the slice that combines two football party food favorites before the big game.

The Dish: Buffalo Chicken pizza ( $3.25 per slice, $22 for a pie)

What's Inside:  The Buffalo chicken slice combines a thin pizza crust with mozzarella and tender chunks of white meat chicken. Instead of traditional marinara sauce, the chicken is coated in an orange-reddish hot sauce.

How's It Taste: The first taste of the Buffalo Chicken pizza brings a soft, doughy crust with fresh mozzarella sprinkled with Italian herbs. The cheese is soft baked, fresh for a mild flavor without being overly greasy.

Branchinelli's buffalo chicken pizza refrains from simply adding hot sauce to marinara. The spicy hot sauce over the chicken is more akin to the basting sauce used on hot wings, as you get the same mildly hot tingle on the palate as if biting into hot wings. It's applied sparingly to provide a medium level heat without being overbearing, complementing the mozzarella.

Eat This Because: It provide great buffalo flavor without being overbearing, at a heat level that is enjoyable. Plus if it's game day and you are trying to watch how much you eat, what better way than combining your hot wings and pizza into one dish without sticky fingers afterwards.

Sides: If you want a take on a New York treat, try the pinwheels ($1.50). It combines spicy pepperoni, ham and mozzarella cheese wrapped between layers of crispy roll that allow easy eating. It's almost a slice by itself.
