UPDATE: Westbound LIE Closed After Man Jumps

Suffolk County Sheriff's department closes LIE westbound from Exit 55 to before Wicks Road for several hours Friday morning.

The westbound Long Island Expressway was closed for several hours Friday afternoon after a man jumped from the Washington Avenue Overpass. 

Suffolk County police said a man jumped from the Washington Avenue overpass onto the westbound lanes of the LIE in what appears to be an attempted suicide at roughly 11 a.m. Friday. 

The man was airlifted by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Police said the man fractured his pelvis and femur as result of the jump.

The incident caused Suffolk County Sheriff's Department to close the LIE westbound from Exit 55/Motor Parkway to just before Exit 53/Wick's Road for several hours Friday for initial investigation. It was reopened to traffic at approximately 1 p.m. 

Michael Sharkley, spokesman for the Suffolk County Sheriff's department, said the inital investigation found there may have been some nearby activity occurring off the expressway prior to incident.

The investigation has been turned over to the Suffolk County Police department.
