Thursday, March 6 beginning at noon Adelphi University's experts on substance abuse and addiction will be holding an online twitter chat on the topic. The subject of substance abuse is trending nationally from the death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman to the recent Newsday story on how insurance coverage tackles addiction – it’s a trend we cannot escape.

Studies show that substance abuse and addiction are on the rise in our country’s more affluent communities. At Adelphi, researchers are analyzing this trend, and faculty are creating academic programs to train counselors in new treatment methods.

Dr. Audrey Freshman, Ph.D., is the Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development and Director of the Postgraduate Certificate in Addictions in Adelphi University’s School of Social Work.

Dr. Errol Rodriguez, Ph.D., is the Assistant Dean and Director of Adelphi’s General Master’s Program and Mental Health Counseling at the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies.
