Boy Scout Troop 3 Takes On High Adventure In The Florida Keys

Two crews consisting of 10 teenage scouts and four leaders from BSA Troop 3 (Smithtown) attended the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base program at the Brinton Environmental Center at Summerland Key, FL from 7/20-7/26/13.   The weather was perfect for the variety of water activities offered on the Keys Adventure program.

Scouts and leaders that attended this unique Scouting program paddle boarded, kayaked, learned to sail, went off shore fishing, snorkeling and night snorkeling while improving teamwork skills and building camaraderie. While snorkeling, they took amazing photos of sharks, barracudas, stingrays, turtles, and dolphins in the crystal clear waters off the Keys.  Two 6 foot sharks, a barracuda and lots of dolphin fish were caught while fishing.  In addition, the crews ventured to Key West for a day of sightseeing fun and to Big Munson Island, an untouched, uninhabited island over 100 acres in size.  Lightweight screened tents, cooking gear and the other necessary equipment is provided by Sea Base, but all personal gear, food, and water was waded ashore by the scouts for their overnight stay.

Sea Base is one of the Boy Scouts of America High Adventure Programs.   This was the first High Adventure Trip that Troop 3 participated in.  The crews earned the Duty to God Award, S.C.E.N.E. patch (Scouting Centers of Excellence for Nature and the Environment), paddle boarding, snorkeling and kayaking patches.
