SOCCER LEGEND PELÉ POSES WITH MADAME TUSSAUDS WAXFIGURE AT THE NEW YORK COSMOS HOME OPENER
New York, NY [April 14, 2014] – Brazilian soccer superstar and The New York Cosmos Honorary President Pelé posed for photos yesterday with cheering fans and his Madame Tussauds New York wax figure to kick off the Cosmos’ season opener at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. Pelé was also presented with an honorary degree by the University for his humanitarian work and contributions to the sport.

Pelé’s figure, usually sporting a Brazilian pride warm-up suit, was re-styled in a retro Cosmos jersey to celebrate the team’s home opener. Pelé played for The New York Cosmos from 1975 – 1977. His figure was originally created based on a casual moment immediately before an international friendly against England at Wembly on May 7, 1963.

“Pelé’s wax figure is such an important presence in our attraction and speaks to his legend within the sport and beyond. We are thrilled that his wax figure was a part of this important moment and we are glad that we could add to the fun at The New York Cosmos home opener,” said Bret Pidgeon, Regional General Manager, Madame Tussauds New York.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, began his professional career at 16 with Santos Futebol Clube in the State of São Paulo and won his first World Cup a year later. He is the only player to win three World Cups and remains the sport’s all-time leading scorer with 1,283 career goals. He is widely regarded as one of the best soccer players of all time.
