The Macular Degeneration Association and Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island Present Free Patient Educational Program: "How to Save Your Vision

Over 125 people attended a free patient educational program titled “How To Save Your Vision” presented by The Macular Degeneration Association and Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island. Lawrence Hoffheimer, Chairman of the Macular Degeneration Association, opened the program with a welcome and introduction. Retinal surgeon Ken Carnevale MD, of OCLI, gave an overview of the causes and symptoms surrounding age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with a focus on precautionary and preventive methods as well as why comprehensive eye exams are important. Retinal Surgeon Glenn Stoller, MD, of OCLI, covered symptoms patients may experience with AMD and how to reduce the effects of AMD by maintaining good eye health. 

 

The symposium also featured a Patient Ambassador, “Madeline” who spoke about her journey and experiences living with AMD. Kristin Protosow, an optometrist with Eye Vision Associates, discussed the difference between macular degeneration and loss of visual function as well as low vision rehabilitation and new treatments and technology available for low vision rehabilitation. Dr. Michael Gross, Chief Medical Officer of PRN Physician Recommended Nutriceuticals spoke about the importance of understanding the risks associated with AMD and how nutrition can offer a method of prevention.

OCLI retinal surgeon Daniel Kiernan, MD and Dr. Stoller wrapped up the symposium with a discussion about the latest technologies and current treatments for dry and wet macular degeneration, specifically the implantable telescope, eye injections and differences between various medications like Lucentis, Avastin and Eylea. They also addressed the advantages and disadvantages of these treatments including safety, efficacy and cost.
