Caring for the Caregiver

Caring for a loved one can be a rewarding experience, but it is important for a care giver to take care of themselves as well.

With the rising cost of health care many families are choosing to care for their aging loved ones themselves. Typically this responsibility falls on one person in the family. This responsibility can be even more challenging if your loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Caregiving can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be overwhelming and stressful. If you don’t take proper care of yourself, the physical and emotional strain can cause anxiety, depression or physical illness. Statistics show that caregivers are twice as likely to suffer from depression if they are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. It is important for a caregiver to take care of themselves. A caregiver is not able to care for a loved one if he or she does not stay in good health, mentally and physically.

◦ Not interested in doing things that you like to do

◦ Feeling angry and resenting your loved one

◦ Feeling that your life has been stolen from you

If you think you are depressed or experiencing signs of caregiver stress, it is important that you see your healthcare provider as well as a mental health professional right away. Be sure to inform them that you are a care giver for a loved one and describe how you have been feeling.

One way to deal with the stress of being a care giver is to take time out for one self. Your local community center or senior center can be a great place to find programs specifically designed for helping care givers. One such program is being run by the Day Haven Adult Day Services Center on Jan. 21, 2012. This is a free program. Care for your loved one can also be provided for those who pre-register.
