'3 Weeks in the Dark': How Hauppauge Coped With Sandy Power Outages

Share your own Sandy story on our open blog.

More than 80 percent of LIPA customers lost power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and many remained in the dark for several days, with a few waiting well more than a week for power to be restored.

On the one year anniversary of Sandy, we asked readers on our Facebook page how long they were without power and how they coped. Here's a few of the responses:

Mike Kontos: 9 days, but I didn't mind it

DeniseAnn Cole-Passarelli:
11 days...had to stay with family and friends, my house was too cold.

Li Vadmer: Was out for almost 3 weeks. Went to live with family. Moved 2x, first to my brothers, then to my moms. Then she lost power in the noreaster, and she moved here!

Laura Mead Rosenberg: 10 days... Too long...

Nina Lafemina: 8 days but had a generator
