Education Commissioner, State Senator Visit Hauppauge Schools

Two state officials got a boots-on-the-ground look at what the Hauppauge school district is doing these days – and they liked what they saw. Department of Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr., and Sen. John Flanagan, R-East Northport, toured Hauppauge Middle School and Pines Elementary on Monday to observe classes and facilities and talk with students and faculty. "I was impressed with the school, where you have an energetic, committed principal [and] teachers who are clearly committed to kids' success," King said following his visit to Hauppauge Middle School. "There's clearly a lot of support here for students at all academic levels."

State Sets Up Travel Time Signs for 347 Amid Greenway Construction

As locals stretching from Commack to Mount Sinai get set to endure years of gridlock on Route 347, the state's Department of Transportation on Monday announced it will install traffic information signs along the North Shore artery telling drivers just how long the waits will be.

Vecchio Takes GOP Primary for Smithtown Supervisor

Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio will run for re-election as the Republican candidate for town supervisor seat this November. Vecchio, R-Fort Salonga, won the Republican nomination to run for Smithtown Town Supervisor over Councilman Robert Creighton by 3,245 votes to 2,566 votes, according to Suffolk County Board of Elections as of 10:27 p.m. Tuesday night. All 92 voting districts are reporting their results. 

Hauppauge Industrial Park Sewer Expansion Nearing Completion

A major expansion of the Suffolk County sewer system within the Hauppauge Industrial Park is nearly complete, according to a report published Tuesday in Newsday. The nearly $42 million project will expand the capacity of the sewer plant – which is located between Motor Parkway and Commerce Drive – to handle 1.65 million gallons of waste water per day, up from 450,000 gallons, according to the report. 

sweetFrog Collecting Food Donations to Fight Childhood Hunger

Frozen yogurt joint sweetFrog, which has a location at 601 Veterans Highway in Hauppauge, is collecting collecting canned and non-perishable food donations next week as part of its Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign.
