Oct. 13: Kicks For Cancer, Blood Drive and School Board Notes

Hauppauge school district shows its community spirit by giving back.

Hauppauge school district is preparing to host Wednesday events that show its community spirit by giving back to nonprofit organizations. The third annual Kicks For Cancer in honor of former student Courtney Tomkin starts at 4 p.m., with a PTA blood drive at Pines Elementary School. 1. Hauppauge High School boys and girls varsity soccer team kick off the third annual Kicks for Cancer starting at 4 p.m. The event honors former student Courtney Tomkin who died of a brain tumor in December 2008. Funds raised through donations, raffles and sales of clothing will benefit The Making Headway Foundation, The American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Courtney Tomkin Scholarship fund.

2. Pines Elementary School PTA is hosting a blood drive, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The district is donating both sweat (Kicks For Cancer) and blood today, to boost local blood banks.

3. Town of Islip will hold  a Town Board Meeting at 1 p.m. Topics for discussion include changes to the traffic code, consideration of authorizing reflective road markers on streets, and grant funding. Public hearings schedules include a hearing on changing laws surrounding clothing drop-off bins.

4. Check back later tonight for a debriefing of Hauppauge school district's Board of Education' meeting on Tuesday night. Potential final tax levy details were discussed, along with Race To The Top obligations and district policy around students' use of cell phones.

5. Superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss said New York State's Race To The Top may cost Hauppauge more than the $14,000 grant received. Check back as Patch tries to follow up on this story.
