Hauppauge residents are searching for clues to their neighborhood's history after unearthing a curious find in recent weeks.
Debra Appice, a resident of Adrienne Lane, said she was out walking her dogs one day when she noticed there appeared to be something hidden by overgrown bushes and trees on the corner of Adrienne Lane and South Plaisted.
"I’ve lived there for 15 years, at the corner, and there’s a house that’s very overgrown. You couldn’t even walk around the corner," Appice said.
In mid May, Appice decided to take a closer look and noticed brick stanchions decorated with the words "Hillside Terrace" in wrought iron. It started a mystery.
Appice said local member of the neighborhood had never heard of a "Hillside Terrace." They don't know where the signs came from, what they reference or its history.
With permission of her neighbors, Appices and local members of the Hauppauge community set to cutting down a tree and clearing brush away from the signs with some help from Town of Smithtown officials. They have restored the sign doing minor repair work and planting a flower bed in front of them.
We'd like to ask you, do you remember a Hillside Terrace in Hauppauge? What was it? Do you have any stories or memories of it?
