Residents Saddened Over Jade Garden Closing

Locals started a conversation when they heard the popular restaurant had closed.

In the few weeks since the Chinese restaurant Jade Garden closed its doors, many residents have expressed in comments on Hauppauge Patch and our Facebook page their regret that a Hauppauge institution is gone.

"It was utterly devastating to hear of this, Jade Garden has been a cornerstone restaurant in Hauppauge," Christopher D'Antonio said in a comment on a Sept. 6 Patch story.

Another commenter, Angie Giordano, said: "Sad to see another empty store front in the community."

Via the Hauppauge Patch Facebook page, Tammi Marks McDonald said: "My family have eaten there regularly since we moved to Hauppauge area! Years and years! This is scary to me – so many struggling businesses shows the state of the region!"

"It's a shame. It was the only non-greasy, reasonably priced sit-down Chinese restaurant around," Amy Hemnc commented.

Michael Foley agreed, saying: "This is unbelievable! 40 years. Best Chinese restaurant on Long Island."

Hau Po, the nearby take-out restaurant owned by the same family, was given mixed reviews by commenters.

"I've been going to Hau Po for takeout since 1983," Robert Gennari commented. "It's the best Chinese takeout in the area, Bar None! Jade Garden was never as good, even though owned by the same family."

Kim Van Epps Cohen offered a different opinion, saying her family went to Hau Po and "ordered the same things we usually do, but it wasn't the same."
