Car Crashes Into Woods, Driver Escapes Unharmed Through Trunk

A car crashed into the woods near the Dennison Building in Hauppauge Thursday morning.

The male driver was able to escape uninjured through the truck of the Toyota Camry following the crash shortly before 9 a.m. on County Access Road. 

Community Meeting About Homeless Shelter Set for October

In a letter to the Hauppauge school community posted this week on the school website, superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss addressed some parents' concerns and announced a meeting set up by Suffolk Legis. John M. Kennedy Jr. to answer the community's questions about the homeless shelter.

The meeting is set for Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Hauppauge High School auditorium.

Cops Investigate Report of Arson on Lincoln Boulevard

Suffolk County's arson squad is investigating an incident in which a truck caught fire in a wooded area on Lincoln Blvd. in Hauppauge.

The truck, a Ford box truck, was discovered in flames at 9:22 p.m. on Sept. 25 in a wooded area behind a building south of Veterans Memorial Highway. 

Fairway Market to Open in Lake Grove Next Spring

Fairway Market is coming to Suffolk County.

The grocery chain announced this week that its first store in the county will open in Lake Grove next spring in the DSW Plaza at 4000 Middle Country Road. 

The 53,000-square-foot store across from the Smith Haven Mall will be the 15th location in the tri-state area for Fairway, which is in the process of a major expansion in which is hopes to open 300 stores across the country. 

Police: Hauppauge Man Caught After Fleeing Crash


A Hauppauge man was arrested Thursday after he crashed his car on New Highway and then fled the scene as police were attempting to apprehend him for striking two vehicles on the Northern State Parkway, State Police said. 

According to police, Peter Mackoul, 31, was driving a 2013 BMW eastbound on the Northern State near Exit 46 at a "high rate of speed" when his car made contact with two other vehicles on the parkway. He was later caught after he crashed his car on New Highway in Hauppauge and fled the scene on foot. 

Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile Virus in Nesconset

A mosquito sample taken from Nesconset has tested positive for West Nile, according to Suffolk County health officials.

It is one of 7 new samples across the county testing positive. The samples were taken between Sept. 19 - 23. Other areas include South Huntington, Dix Hills, Copiague and West Babylon.
