Week in Review: Hauppauge Greenway Still in the Works

A look back at the top stories this past week on Hauppauge Patch.

Checkers Closes At Smithtown/Lake Grove Border
The Checkers drive-in burger shop in Lake Grove has closed less than one year after it opened.

As of Friday morning, all of the signage at the chain burger joint were removed, the inside had been largely gutted and a handwritten is sign reading "this location is closed" hung on the door.

Behold Your Greenway, Hauppauge
Years of local headaches over gridlock, construction noise and other snafus have finally yielded the Greenway long promised for the region.

Well, at least the beginning of it.

The stretch of Route 347 between Vet's Highway and Route 111 is all but done, and as planned by the state, it's full of the "green" amenities that were promised.

Locals Still Hope Crusty Pizza Hut Eyesore Can Be Salvaged
It's not Hauppauge's fault that one of its most recognizable landmarks is the vacant and decaying former Pizza Hut building on Route 111.

Maybe it's the fact that it sits on a roadway that nearly everyone in town uses daily. Or perhaps it's that distinctive Pizza Hut architecture that makes it stand out among other vacant eyesores. Either way, when Hauppauge locals talk to us about blight, Pizza Hut comes up.

Veterans and Bikers Honor U.S. Troops in Islandia
The Village of Islandia held its third annual Motorcycle Poker Run to benefit Jacob’s Light Foundation on May 5.

Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam War veteran, spoke at the event, which concluded at the law office of Rappaport Glass Levine & Zullo LLP in Islandia on May 5.

Hauppauge BOE Candidate Nominations Reopened
Due to a Hauppauge Board of Education candidate recently withdrawing his name from the ballot, petitions nominating new candidates have been reopened.
