Whiz Kid: Hauppauge Girl Takes To The Mats

Emily Clackett, 9, is proving through wrestling that girls can do anything they put their mind to.

Whiz Kid's School: Bretton Woods Elementary School

Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Emily is the first female to win a youth wrestling tournament for Hauppauge in Feb. 22, 2010. This year she returns to matts, eagerly looking to compete and the possibility of a second title.

Whiz Kid’s Key to Awesomeness:  Emily grew up watching the Hauppauge’s youth wrestling team since she was born, as daughter of Hauppauge Youth Wrestling Team’s coach Charlie Clackett. She decided one day, three years ago that she would like to wrestle as well.

One of the only three girls on the team, Emily said  “Wrestling has taught me that I’m strong.”

In 2010, Emily won an impressive 17 matches. Since she’s started, two other girls have joined the team, inspired by Emily’s ability.

“It’s fun and takes a lot of effort,” Emily said. “But when you win, you feel really proud of yourself.”
