10 Places To Shop For Crafty People

Our list of places to shop for people who crafty, artists or might prefer homemade gifts.

Do you have a craft person on your holiday shopping list who could always use new supplies? May be you are tight on money this year and considering giving homemade gifts. Here are 10 places to find supplies to make handmade gifts, or find supplies for the do-it-yourself crafty in Hauppauge.

A.C. Moore on Route 347 in Hauppauge, in the ShopRite shopping center, is full of material for crafty people.  From yarn to woodworking supplies to artist's pastels, faux flower arrangements, beads, stickers, and even T-shirt making kits; you will find plenty of things to work with and may even spark a new idea or two while you're there.

If there's a fix-it or handyman in your life, this is a place to get them the tools needed to get the job done. All American Hardware on Motor Parkway has a large selection of tools, a lawn care section, plumbing section and more designed for projects around the house and low-level construction jobs.

Keep Me In Stitches, on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset, offers many things from knitting and beading groups to knitting classes, yarn, beads, beaded jewelry and beading tools. It's a great resource for people who make jewelery or knit to relax.

The crafty superstore Michael's, at the corner of Route 25 and Veterans Highway in Commack, sells art supplies across various categories. From floral arrangement and frames to oils, pastels to scrapbooking suppplies, there is something for every artists no matter their medium.

Fabrics $1 to $3 on Jericho Turnpike in Commack is an excellent place to find a large selection of inexpensive fabrics. Stop by to pick up a luxurious fabric for your interior home decorator or crafty fashionista to create a new outfit

Walmart, on Veteran's Memorial Highway in Islandia, also has a large fabric section, good for making clothes and home decor. It's one of the few stories in the large chain that still have an extensive craft section that includes both supplies, fabrics and even sewing machines for seamstresses and do-it-yourself people.

This old-fashioned hobby store provides all the necessary supplies for those who are into hands on hobbies. Find tools and supplies for diecast models, woodworking, and more. There's also a selection of Lionel model trains for those who like to make landscapes come to life.

9. Plasterkraze
Plasterkraze on Middle Country Road in Selden is a wonderful place to bring children who'd rather make their gifts for family or friends.  They can channel their energy and creativity into painting a variety of three-dimensional objects, often cartoon-like or statuesque, made of plaster.

10. Thrift Stores
Another option for finding stray, endearing objects and fabric to work with would be to survey your local thrift shop. This is also a good option for those with limited funds. Two nearby thrift stores are the Goodwill on Middle Country Road in Centereach and Selden Thrift further east on Middle Country Road in Selden.

Bonus: Look right outside your door... nature offers up some good alternatives! Children and adults alike can make holiday wreaths or ornaments with pine cones and branches. Heading out to the uncrowded winter beaches could prove successful in finding shells to use in jewelry or a variety of other projects.
