5 Local Businesses Who Have Opened Or Closed In 2010

Hauppauge's small businesses see changes during the 2010 recession.

Hauppauge's local businesses make up the retail backbone of the community, forming a chain of shops that fill residents everyday needs. In 2010, the ongoing recession caused a number of changes among these businesses.

There were both opening and closings, as some businesses were forced to shut their doors others used this as an opportunity.  Here are five local businesses who either opened or closed their doors in 2010:

1.  served up its last dishes to customers shortly before Thanskgiving in November. The high-end, fine dining establishment fell on hard times and forced a change of ownership. It was well known as a place to network during cocktail hours by the workers of Hauppauge's industrial park.

2. In its place, opened  a family-friendly establishment serving up quality food in the same large portions that Venue 56 was known for. There has been a change in ownership as well as the chefs, who now focus on a menu consisting of soups, salads, a burger bar and Italian dishes including both seafood and pasta.

3. The Sonoma Coffee Shop on Veterans Highway, in the same building at and near , closed in August. The coffee shop offered various select coffee drinks including blends with Godiva chocolate, gelato, pastries and more. It's leather couches were a welcoming if hidden retreat from Hauppauge's busy traffic.

4. Enterprising business owner Kathy Saltalamacchio opened within her current store to expand her offerings. In addition to

5. opened its first location on Wheeler Road across from With opening its own location, relocating from Temple Beth Chai's basement, has brought new life to the business and really given its own storefront and place within Hauppauge.
