The rumbling thunder of bowling balls striking pins can be heard echoing through AMF Smithtown Lanes.

AMF Smithtown Lanes has reopened its doors for bowling for the first time since February, when the record-setting blizzard's caused the bowling alley's roof to collapse under the weight of the heavy snow.

"We did our soft opening about a week and a half ago," said general manager Don Stewart. "We still have no sound system and there few other things we are working to get up and running."

AMF Smithtown Lanes started the process of bringing its bowling leagues back to the Smithtown location on Tuesday night, according to Stewart, as two more prepared to compete on Thursday night. All of the Smithtown leagues had been shifted to its Commack and Centereach locations while the building was closed for repairs.

Smithtown residents are more than welcome to drop in for open bowling this weekend, Stewart said, but he emphasized the bowling alley's facilities and services are "not at 100 percent."

Stewart said he expects the bowling alley to celebrate its grand re-opening in roughly two weeks.

Rebuilding AMF Smithtown lanes has taken more than six months. Henry Streich, general manager at Commack Lanes, told Patch in March that it would need to be "completely rebuilt."

As of July, workers  said lanes still needed to be put back together and ceiling work needed to be done but roof repairs were done.
