Disc Graphics Buys DNA Technology To Fight Against Counterfeits

Hauppauge-based hopes to offer cutting edge packaging that would make counterfeit perfumes, drugs easier to distinguish.

announced Monday it had obtained exclusive rights to incoporate DNA technology in its product packaging. 

The Hauppauge-based specialty packaging company signed an exclusive agreement with Applied DNA Sciences in Stony Brook, to be able to use its  APDN's SigNature DNA taggants in forensic labels and packaging in anti-counterfeit measures. 

"The agreement leverages Disc's broad customer base of high value brands and offers us a leading edge, forensic anti-counterfeit solution to combat the growing problem of counterfeit and grey market goods enterign the supply and distribution chain," said Margarent Krumholz, president of Disc Graphics in a statement.

The company offer a range of prepress and design services, including digital and offset printing, that is used to make paperboard, plastic and other materials into product packaging for retail companies.

"Our core customers, including major film studios, pharmaceutical manufacturers, fragrance and luxury brand companies all experiences market erosion from counterfeit products and are searching for weapons to battle this multi-billion dollar problem," Krumholz said in a statement.

The company believes it can help customers fight against counterfeiters by incorporating DNA into its packages to make them more easily distinguished. 

The global anti-counterfeit packaging market is estimated to reach about $82.2 billion by 2015, according to California-based Global Industry Analystics.
