Frozen Yogurt Puts Tasty Twist on Traditional Summer Treat

Red Mango's frozen yogurts offer an alternative option to ice cream.

Red Mango opened for its doors for business in Hauppauge this April, the weather wasn't quite hot enough to start craving cold sweets. Now that summer has arrived, Patch stepped inside to check out what the buzz about his frozen yogurt shop was about.

The Dish: Dark Chocolate Frozen Yogurt with graham cracker crumbs and mini chocolate chips toppings ($3.17 for approximately 6 oz.).

What's Inside: It's frozen non-fat yogurt made with skim milk, water, pure cane sugar and the secret ingredient, dark Ghirardelli chocolate and cocoa mixed in. A crumbled graham cracker topping and mini dark chocolate chips were added from the toppings bar, making it almost reminiscent of summer s'mores.

How's It Taste: Take it from someone who isn't fond of eating regular yogurt for lunch, the dark chocolate frozen yogurt was a surprisingly tasty treat. Read Mango's frozen yogurt has a rich and creamy taste that coats your mouth. It won't leave you wishing you went out for ice cream instead.

A first-time customer at Red Mango might find themselves overwhelmed by the number of options. The frozen yogurt shop is self serve, so head to the back to grab a cup or glass and get started.

A row of large ice cream mixers along the back wall offer customers the choice of 12 flavors ranging from white peach to Madagascar vanilla. Don't worry, there's still original flavor of frozen yogurt for traditionalists.

Moving along to the toppings bar, customers can select from a mix of health and kid-friendly toppings. There's sliced almonds, granola, fruit pebbles, fresh fruit and Reese Pieces for those with a sweet tooth.

Your frozen yogurt creation will be weighed by the register, $0.45 cents per ounce, before being given a spoon to dig in.

Eat This Because: The frozen yogurt is lower in calories than traditional ice cream, ranging from 80 to 100 calories per a half cup, based on nutritional information posted on Red Mango's website. It's one way to cut calories while enjoying a summer treat, or an excuse to eat twice as much.
