Globecomm Profit Jumps, Stantec Swings to Profit, CA Buys Austin Firm and IVCi Launches Travel Option

We've got a rundown of the latest briefs coming from Hauppauge businesses.

Globecomm's fiscal first-quarter profit skyrockets

Hauppauge-based Globecomm Systems said Friday its fiscal first-quarter profit jumped 75 percent year over year on an increase in sales and two acquisitions during the quarter.

The satellite-based network provider posted profit of $2.1 million during the period, compared with profit of $1.2 million in its fiscal first quarter last year.

Sales increased 11.6 percent over the year-ago period to $53.2 million during the quarter. A large leap in service-based revenue, which increased more than 50 percent to $42.9 million, a record for Globecomm, was offset by a 46 percent plummet in infrastructure revenue, which the company said fell to $10.3 million because of the problems in the global economy and timing of earnings.

Service revenue was boosted $4.3 million by the acquisitions of C2C and Evocomm during the quarter.

"From an earnings perspective, the first quarter was stronger than originally anticipated," Globecomm Chief Executive David Hershberg said in a statement. "We look forward to what is anticipated to be a record financial year and to the introduction of new products and service offerings."

Stantec swings to a profit in third quarter

Canada-based Stantec, which has an office in Hauppauge Industrial Park, said Thursday it swung to a profit in the third quarter on a charge in the year-ago period for the impairment of intangible assets.

Stantec posted profit of $32.1 million for the three months that ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of $9.99 million in the same period last year.

In last year's third quarter, Stantec recorded a $35 million charge for the impairment of intangible assets and goodwill, which could be anything from the amount of money a company pays over book value for an acquisition to copyrights, trade secrets and patents.

Sales inched up 2.6 percent during the quarter to $314 million, and Stantec said it gained $7.2 million from the sale of its 30 percent stake in Fugro Jacques Geosurveys.

The company also acquired six firms across the country during the quarter.

CA acquires Austin-based capacity management firm

CA Technologies said last week it acquired Austin-based Hyperformix, a firm that provides software to help companies make IT decisions.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Islandia-based CA said the acquisition expands its services in cloud computing, which provides shared resources and software over the Internet to different devices like computers and smart phones.

Hyperformix offers capacity management software, which helps make predictions about future performance in relation to IT management, for cloud infrastructures, among other types of IT.

IVCi launches travel alternative

Hauppauge-based IVCi, a company that offers video conferencing, and business travel management company Adelman Travel said last week they've launched their Unified Video Travel Service.

The service will offer a video conference alternative while customers are booking travel through Adelman's site as a means to save companies the expense of travel.

The new service will also track those who use or don't use the service and reason for declining the video meeting. For those who choose a video conference, money and miles saved will also be reported to clients to help them more easily realize the savings of using video meetings.
