Hibachi Restaurant Opens Near Smith Haven Mall

K60, the latest entry into Hibachi dining, opens in space formerly occupied by Curry Club.

K60 is the latest eatery joining the growing ranks of Japanese steak houses in the area.

The restaurant, which held its grand opening on Jan. 6, is owned by sushi chef, San Gao, who has similar restaurants in New Jersey and Connecticut. The eatery takes the place of the Curry Club, in Lake Grove on Middle Country Road.

The bar area is large and boasts two large flat screen televisions and tables for eating. Their is a sushi bar in a separate room off the dining room, which holds several hibachi tables.

"We've been busy, very busy," said Gao. "Last Saturday we had lots of customers."

Residents can choose from several Japanese restaurants in the nearby area including Kumo in Stony Brook, Nishike in Selden and Hotoke in Smithtown. Gao said what sets his place apart from other Japanese steak houses is service and quality.

"We get in top quality Angus steak and fresh seafood," said Hibachi chef, Alen Li, who has been a chef for 11 years. "We have fun at the tables, we make our customers laugh, make them happy."

If you get to K60 and find you have a wait, consider it a happy accident and head to the bar to try a watermelon mojito, a colorful and tasty drink, which is a specialty of the house. If something a little more exotic suits you try a White Lotus, made with Van Gogh coconut and pineapple vodka, amaretto, coconut milk and pineapple juice.

There are 11 types of Sake to chose from and 70 different types of wine on the menu.

For a starter, Gao recommends the lobster tartar or encrusted salmon martini. There are 22 special rolls, all priced between $10-15. From the kitchen, diners can order a range of dishes including tempura and teriyaki.

Large parties will probably enjoy the experience of Hibachi dining where the chef cooks at the table, entertaining and sometimes shooting sake out of a squeeze bottle into the mouths of willing participants.

For kids there is a children's menu, which doesn't include the typical line up of chicken fingers, but instead has hibachi dishes.

Lunch at K60 is served Mon.-Sat. from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Dinner is Mon.-Thurs.4:30-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 4:30-11 p.m. and on Sunday from 12-9:30 p.m. They are located at 2811 Middle Country Road, Lake Grove.
