Motor Parkway Plaza Earns LEED Silver

Mixed-Use office and retail space receives LEED certification from the United States Green Building Council.

The Motor Parkway Plaza in Hauppauge has received Silver LEED certification from the United State Green Building Council, becoming the highest certified mixed-use retail and commercial building on Long Island.

"Receiving LEED Silver Certification proves that we have accomplished what we set out to do – build green.  Moving forward our current tenants and those who will fill the remaining space, visitors, the community and the environment will all benefit from our carefully conceived and developed project," said David Abel, developer and principal of United Realty and Triangle Properties in a statement.

The 36,000-square-foot shopping center puts together a combination of retail storefront, office space and restaurant on land purchased more than 40 years ago by United Realty. It incorporates various state-of-the-art technologies including building management systems, recycled materials and a photovoltaic solar panel system to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards.

"The Motor Parkway Plaza qualified for LEED Silver Certification after a complete review of the project by USGBC of its green design, features and systems.  This project demonstrates a long-term commitment to planning and building green.  Developers David Abel and Gary Schacker had a clear vision beginning many years ago for what they wanted to see on this property," said Vince Capogna, executive director of the USGBC of Long Island, in a statement.

Motor Parkway Plaza has more than installed on the building's rooftop, producing up to 75 kilowatts that can provide 25 percent of the electricity needed for the common areas, parking lot and common space.

Jimmy Carchietta, founder and CEO of The Cotocon Group who oversaw the building's design, said the building's photovoltaic capacity could be more than doubled by the installation of more panels, as only half the rooftop is currently being used.

The shopping center on July 30, with tenants including Dunkin Donuts, Exit 55 Liquors, FedEx, and Ideal Image open for business.

Both are expected to open for business in the Motor Parkway Plaza by the end of August, beginning of September.
