PenAir Launches Service From MacArthur Airport

Regional airline now offering two flights daily to Boston.

PenAir has officially taken off from Long Island.

The Alaska-based airline on Thursday flew its inaugural flight from Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma to Logan International Airport, marking the return of flights to Boston from LIMA for the first time since 2008.

“We looked for great partners like PenAir and joined forces to give our residents what they have asked for; more flights and more airlines,” said Tom Croci, Islip Town Supervisor.

PenAir’s service from MacArthur marks its first entry into the New York Metropolitan area. Talks to bring the airline to Islip started more than a year ago and became a reality this past March.

While new to Long Island, PenAir was founded in 1955 and is one of the largest regional airlines in Alaska. It operates Saab 340 turbo-prop aircraft and has more than 400 employees in Alaska and on the east coast.

“Our plan is to start with two daily round-trips (between Long Island and Boston) and add flights as the demand builds,” said Dave Hall, PenAir’s chief operating officer.

PenAir’s current MacArthur schedule includes an 8:40 a.m. and a 7:10 p.m. flight to Boston.

In addition to the new Long Island service, PenAir also flies from Boston to Presque Isle, Maine; Bar Harbor, Maine; and Plattsburgh, N.Y.
