The Business Corners Brings Co-Working To Hauppauge

Hauppauge attorney Ed Scheine rents out office space so businesspeople who work without offices can get the benefits of working near other professionals.

Hauppauge-based attorney Ed Scheine with the help of his son, Jonathan, has transformed 5,000 square feet of his Motor Parkway legal office into a co-working center, The Business Corners, to open this June.

Co-working, which is essentially rented office space, is a concept where independent business professionals work side-by-side, networking, building partnership and leading to possible collaboration on future projects, according to Ed Scheine.

“It’s very hard to work out of the home and be creative,” he said. “A lot of the time it will be conversations with people that spark new ideas.”

“The main thing most co-workers are battling is isolation,” added Jonathan.

The co-working concept was created in Toronto, Canada at the Center for Social Innovation, Jonathon said, and has since spread through Canada, Japan, Florida and Manhattan.

Ed said he became a fan of co-working after years of difficulty working afterhours as a lawyer.

“I tried to work at home. I’m a lawyer and I would bring home two bags of files at night. Between the dogs and the television, I couldn’t concentrate,” he said.

The Business Corners has a variety of rooms designed to provide different working environments. A central networking lounge provides a first stop for members to work in the open or brainstorm together in front of a fireplace. Smaller offices connected to the lounge allow individuals and small groups seek a more private working space.

The center’s basic amenities including mobile desks, whiteboards, a kitchen with free coffee, and an Internet station for those who forget their laptops will be available to all members.

Membership costs $25  for daily pass. Ed said other memberships are available upon application. One of the gold members who has offices within the building is Online Marketing Muscle, an Internet marketing firm.
