Envisioning Hauppauge

Before we begin ruminating on recommendations to further establish and enhance Hauppauge's Hub, it is useful to bring some additional background information on this "Hub" to light.

Adding to the confluence of major roadways which occur within the Hub is the convergence of 3 of Suffolk County Transit's bus routes: the S54 from Walt Whitman Mall to Patchogue, S45 from Smithtown to Bay Shore, and the S62 from Hauppauge Industrial Park to Port Jefferson. The S45 and S54 are amongst the 4 busiest routes in the county system, according ot Suffolk County Transit.

Developing within the area bounded by Routes 111, 347, 454, and Townline Road is the primary commercial corridor in the Hub. This corridor most heavily shapes the character of Route 111 (Wheeler Road or Hauppauge Boulevard) by surrounding it with retail, bank, office, institutional and restaurant uses as it travels through Hauppauge. It is likely the closest thing to a Main Street that Hauppauge has! There are five main shopping centers along the corridor, more than 90 storefronts, and many office spaces (a number of which cater to medical professionals.)

The Hub is the location of one of Hauppauge's first settlements in 1735, hosts the Methodist Church (The oldest religious institution and building in the hamlet), is the headquarters of the Hauppauge Fire Department (First formed in 1929), and has hosted Hauppauge's schools since the late 1800s. These Hauppauge identifiers are joined by a number of businesses which utilize the hamlet's name in their own, and by amenities like the Hauppauge welcome sign, institutions like the Post Office and Library, and streets like Hauppauge Boulevard.

Worthy of note is the village of people who live within easy walking distance of the businesses of the Hub. Approximately 300 households or 750 residents are located within a 1/2 mile or 8 minute walk of the Hub's center (This number leaves out the large Devonshire and Stratford Apartment Complexes which are just outside 1/2 a mile). For the approximately 30,000 residents within 2 miles of the Hub, a 5 minute breeze of a bike ride is all it would take to reach the center.

So, with these features established we have a firm jumping off point to consider some more specific issues and potential solutions to enhance the identity of the Hub and create a true sense of built community in Hauppauge.
