Apple Staff, Shoppers Craft Memorial to Steve Jobs

Post-it Notes carry public messages of thanks, praise for Jobs on front window of Mall storefront.

Local shoppers and Apple staff members put together an impromptumemorial to Steve Jobs outside the Apple store at Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove Thursday morning, which includes posted messages on the storefront.

An Apple staff member, who did not identify himself, said he came into work early to post a portion of Steve Jobs' 2005 commencement address at Stanford University.

It reads, "No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it."

One month after stepping down as chief executive, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died on Wednesday of pancreatic cancer. He was 56 years old.

The mood at the Apple store was quiet, somber and reflective as staff members talked quietly about Jobs death and posted their own memories on the glass store front.

"You changed my life when you created my home away from home. You gave me a career and a second family. Thank you," read one staff member's message.

A stack of yellow Post-In notes and pens were left on the floor in front of the memorial for shoppers to add their own as the day goes on.

"It's a lost of a world visionary, almost like a modern-day Edison. It's almost like Jobs knew what the world needed before it new," said Apple customer Scott Lazenby. "It's sad to think what we lost, to what he could have created if he had lived a little longer."

Lazenby began using Apple product when the iPhone 3GS first came out. Since, he said he has started using other products including the iPad and computers.

"I think [Jobs] genuinely liked helping others explore technology. He wasn't in it for the money like others," Lazenby said.
