The Greater Smithtown Chamber of Commerce will host the sixth annual this Saturday at New York Avenue School.
More than 500 runners are expected take to the streets of downtownESmithtown this Saturday, said Smithtown Chamber Executive Director Barbara Franco. This year, the chamber is offering residents the chance to pre-register in person on Friday, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the Professional Personal Training Institute, 1C Miller Place, Smithtown.
"There were so many runners waiting on line last year, we though would alleviate the pre-registration line. They'll be guaranteed a T-shirt and, of course, miss the line," Franco said.
As of Thursday afternoon, approximately 250 runners has pre-registered for the race. Runners will head south down Juniper Avenue, turning right on Cygent Drive before the long homestretch on New Mill Road to the finish line at New York Avenue School. The route measures 5 kilometers, or 3.1 miles.
The annual event benefits the Courtney Sipes Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization in memory of a Smithtown girl and Pines Elementary School student who was killed in a accident on Smithtown Main Street in November 2009. The charity provides scholarships and opportunities for children looking to pursue interests in the arts and music.
Proceeds will also be donated to Hauppauge-based Angela's house, a nonprofit that helps aid medically frail children and their families obtain needed care and services.
Registration will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, costing $25 per running. Awards will be given to the top finishes. A 1K Family Fun Run will be held prior to the 5K race at 8:45 a.m.
