Five Ways to Remember 9/11 Near Hauppauge

A list of the memorial ceremonies and events being held throughout Hauppauge and Nesconset this weekend.

As we approach the 10th anniversary of the 9/11, many Hauppauge and Nesconset organizations will be holding a memorial ceremony or event to honor both the victims and heroes of the day.

Here are five ways you can join the community in remembering 9/11:

1.   On Sept. 8, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy will hold a commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks honoring the victim's lives and memories. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. in the north parking lot of the H. Lee Dennison Building, overlooking the "Gardens of Remembrance" in Armed Forces Plaza.

2. Join the in remembering their fallen brothers and other firefighters killed on 9/11  in a ceremony on Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.

3. The 9/11 Responders Remembered will hold an unveiling and dedication of their at Gibbs Pond Road and Smithtown Boulevard at 10:30 a.m Saturday. This memorial park is the first in New York to honor first responders who died of 9/11 related illnesses.

4. Create a at the on Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to noon. Families can add their story to the quilt by designing their own square to the community quilt that will be displayed in the library. Register in advance through the library's website.

5. Join the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce as they pay tribute to both those who died and the heroes who survived the 9/11 attacks with a brief ceremony at 11 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Nesconset Gazebo, next to the Nesconset branch of the Smithtown Special Library District.
