Hauppauge School District announced Sunday afternoon that classes are canceled on Monday.
Hauppauge saw two feet of snow fall Friday night into Saturday, with other areas getting more; 25 inches fell in Smithtown and 28 in St. James, according to the National Weather Service.
Saturday and Sunday, town road crews have battled to recover from the onslaught from Mother Nature – Supervisor Pat Vecchio related to News12 that he was told roads would be cleared by 5 p.m. Sunday. But the town was unable to clear all streets by then, according to readers, leaving many roads unsafe for travel.
Monday's commute looks to suffer even more as a result of a freezing rain coming in as well. Though ice accumulation is expected to be limited, even a thin layer is enough to cause concern.
Several other districts in the area had canceled class on Monday prior to Hauppauge declaration, including Smithtown, Three Village, Consewogue, Port Jefferson, Mt. Sinai, Rocky Point, Miller Place, Shoreham-Wading River, and Riverhead.
