Hauppauge's 10 Biggest Sports Wins of 2010

These fall season victories united teams and the community, often for a larger cause.

The Hauppauge Eagles varsity sports teams took to the fields this fall with determination and intensity. While each team's season was filled with highs and lows, these 10 games of 2010 stand out for the team spirit and determination shown each game.

Here are the 10 games of 2010:

1.: Eagles football made sure there was no doubt the team would clinch its 2010 homecoming game Oct. 23. Six different scored touchdowns, creating a 20-0 lead by the halftime. What makes this game stand out is not the margin of victory, the community spirit that banded together the thousands of fans who attended the game. The atmosphere was celebratory from halftime on, only heightened by the remarkable plays in a 55-yard punt return by Anthony Brody-Santos and 73-yard run by Cory Wood.

2.: Hauppauge's girl varsity soccer team took to the field directed and focused at their annual Kicks for Cancer event, to win the match in honor of their late team manager Courtney Tomkin. Donning pink tie-dyed T-shirts, the girls were spurred on by the thousands of fans towards the win in another community pride.

3. :  The Eagles girls soccer faces a daunting challenge out of the gate. Their first league season match was against Huntington, a rematch of the Suffolk County Class A 2009 Championships. Hauppauge proved they were a force to be reckoned with, despite graduating a number of girls, by winning 3-0 on Oct. 13.

4. : The varsity football team managed to pulled itself together after a pre-game mishap. Starting senior Dom Ripole was injured, sustaining a broken arm during a pre-game scrimmage on Oct. 16. Despite this blow and high winds, the Eagles managed to win and at one point take a 30-point lead.

5. This Oct. 8 game was a show of team determination as the Eagles stayed focused despite a physical match to claim a 1-0 victory. Both coaches agreed the winning point was a lucky shot carried by the wind under the crossbar, but you have to stay on the attack to have a shot at winning.

: This match gave the Eagles varsity boys volleyball a winning record, putting them at  4-3 in the league on Oct. 6. The victory was a team effort as coach Chris Varthalamis made sure every player had time on the court.

7. : The Eagle's offensive line men stepped-it up for the first time during the fall season, allowing Hauppauge's running game to excel. It was a turning point in the Eagles' season, curbing losses for a late successful run that ended just short of the playoffs.

8.: This game is noteworthy for the accomplishment of junior Stephanie Paragallo who scored all 5 goals in the team's 5-0 victory on Oct. 6.

9. : Eagles varsity girls tennis stepped it up on the courts to get the upper hand. Winning their third straight match is one way to prove they had broken a four-game losing streak.

10. :  Who doesn't like to start their fall season on a win? This game gave an inexperienced squad the confidence to look forward to the games ahead.
