Japanese Teacher Spreads Word of Hauppauge Relief

Tokyo resident Toshiko Ohta, using a T-shirt from a Hauppauge fundraiser, is getting out the message about the community's donations toward the international relief effort.

A Japanese teacher has received one of Hauppauge High School's Japan Relief Concert T-shirts and is using it to spread news of the community's support.

Toshiko Ohta, a teacher at a Tokyo international school, received a package from her childhood friend, Hauppauge resident Paul Borowski, that contained a T-shirt from the held on April 7 at . Ohta wrote in an email that she hopes to donate the T-shirt to one of Japan's homeless shelters for tsunami victims.

"Please tell students in Hauppauge that their good wishes are well received in Tokyo and will be relayed to the north," Ohta said in the email.

The concert raised approximately $4,200 for the American Red Cross and collected more then 2,000 pairs of socks., who received help from more than 30 student volunteers during the event.

Ohta and her students are creating their own fundraisers to help the Japanese people. Her students' parents created a colorful quilt that will be auctioned off, with the proceeds to benefit the tsunami victims.

In addition, the international school is hosting its own donation drive that collects goods to be delivered to Sendai, Japan.
