Nesconset Library Receives Sustainable Design Award

BBS Architects and Engineers is honored for converting former armory into a public library.

The architects behind the new Nesconset branch of the Smithtown Special Library District have received recognition for its design.

The Long Island chapter of the American Institute of Architect awarded BBS Architects and Engineers the 2011 Sustainable Design for its work in converting the former Nesconset armory into a public library.

"We are tremendously honored to receive the 2011 Sustainable Design Award," said BBS President and lead architect Roger Smith in a statement. "The Nesconset Library branch project presented the BBS design team with an exciting opportunity to redevelop an abandoned structure into an environmentally responsible public use facility that will serve the local community for decades to come."

The 25,000-square-foot space building was fully renovated with new lighting, electrical, plumbing and heating ventilation and air-conditioning units. BBS concerted the armory's former drill space into an open space library plan that allows in natural light.

The Nesconset branch of the Smithtown Special Library District is currently undergoing LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, with hopes of LEED Silver certification.
