More than 100 Without Power in Hauppauge

Heat-related outages sweet southern Hauppauge, areas along Townline Road.

More than 100 Hauppauge residents are coming home to find themselves without power Friday afternoon due to apparent heat-related outages.

Long Island Power Authority's Storm Center is reporting that 122 Hauppauge customers are experiencing an interruption in service.

The areas affected appear to be in the southeast section of Hauppauge, near Expressway Drive North between Exits 57 and 56. There are smaller outages each less than five customers along Terry Road and near Hidden Pond Park.

Most of the outages were caused from blown fuses or transformers. Crews are either being dispatched or are at the scene, according to Mark Gross with LIPA.

Most should expect to have power back by 7:30 p.m., according to estimates from the power authority.

Suffolk County has opened a cooling center in Brentwood for residents looking to escape the heat at Brentwood Senior Center, 16 Second Ave., Brentwood from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Normally, residents could seek local shelter at the but staff members said they are having difficulties with their air conditioning and are waiting upon repair services.

Other options to stay cool including until 7 p.m. and the in Nesconset until dusk. 

In a statement, LIPA said that it has sufficient supply to meet energy demand during the heat wave. They encouraged customers to use electricity efficiently during the heat and high humidity.

Extra crews will be on duty this weekend to respond to heat-related outages.

To use energy efficiently during periods of high heat and humidity, customers should, according to LIPA do the following:

  • Put air conditioners on timers, don't let them run when not at home;
  • Set air conditioners at 78 degrees;
  • Use fans to circulate cool air, which helps cut air conditioner use;
  • Set refrigerators and freezers at most efficient temperatures; and
  • Run major appliances such as clothes and dishwashers in the morning or late evening to avoid the peak demand hours of 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
