PHOTOS: Inmates Clean Up Suffolk County 9/11 Memorial

The glass-walled garden gets weeded and mulched to look its best for this year's memorial ceremonies.

Suffolk County inmates weeded the 9/11 memorial in front of the H. Lee Dennison building Wednesday afternoon in preparation for this year's  memorial ceremonies.

A County corrections officer at the memorial said inmates had pulled two dump truck loads of weeds from the Garden of Remembrance. After weeding, the inmates put down mulch to further improve the overall look and protect plants.

The Garden of Remembrance was intentionally designed to go natural with no maintenance, symbolic of the permanent separation from loved ones killed in the attacks, but had taken on a shaggy, uncared for appearance.

"I think it really looks poorly for such a nice tribute. I wonder what other adults must think and the families that go to visit the site to pay tribute to their loved ones," wrote Hauppauge resident Laura LoPiccolo to Patch in late July.

A sunset ceremony to respect and honor those killed on 9/11 will be held at the Garden of Remembrance on Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
