Rain, Winds Create Power Outages in Smithtown

Nearly 6,000 temporarily left without power Thursday morning in Nesconset, St. James and Fort Salonga.

Heavy winds and rains have left nearly 6,000 Town of Smithtown residents without power as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Long Island Power Authority is reporting 5,957 Smithtown customers without electricity as of 10:45 a.m. By town, there are 3,879 outages in Nesconset, 1,999 in St. James and 79 reported in Fort Salonga, according to LIPA's Storm Center Outage Map

LIPA officials had electricity restored to these residents by approximately 11 a.m.

The utility company has issued an alert, stating they are prepared for the chance of power outages throughout the day given weather forecast: 

With the potential for heavy rains and high winds throughout the day, LIPA crews are prepared to respond to any power outages that may occur and to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

Residents with a power outage or downed wires can report these to LIPA by calling  1-800-490-0075 or texting OUT to  myLIPA (695472), which requires pre-registration. 

LIPA charts all reported power outages on its Storm Center's Outages map, providing updates every 15 minutes.
