Rotary To Host Ira Block Memorial Golf Classic

Charity outing provides college scholarships for students who have overcome the odds.

The Hauppauge Rotary Club is preparing to host its 15th annual Ira Block Memorial Golf Classic at the Rock Hill Golf and Country Club in Manorville on June 22.

Event chairman Justin Block said the event is named after his father, Ira Block, who was one of the charter members of Hauppauge Rotary Club. The charity event raise money to provide two $1,000 "Second Chance" scholarships for local residents who have overcome life's obstacles.

Ira Block had his own private law practice and briefly served on the Town Board of Smithtown before becoming a Suffolk County Court Judge in 1985. He was instrumental in starting Suffolk County's Drug Treatment Court, where select drug-related offenders can complete a court-supervised rehabilitative program instead of jail time.

The chairmen said his father would have been happy to see those deserving given a second chance.

"It became his life's work. He said he wanted to stay alive long enough to open drug court," Justin said.

Hauppauge High School Student Danielle Woodard, who is ranked No. 10 in the Class of 2011, is one of this year's recipients. The other scholarship, reserved for a graduate of the Suffolk County Drug Court system, has not yet been chosen.

The cost to play in this year's tournament is $175 per player, $75 for dinner. The event kicks off on June 22 at 11:30 a.m. with registration and a barbecue lunch before a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Special guests will be former professional hockey players Chris and Peter Ferraro. be a driving range, cocktail reception and inner, silent auctions, raffles and more.
