Route 347 Update: Drainage Work on Brooksite Drive

Workers will move eastward to Route 111 next week.

The NY Route 347 Safety, Mobility and Environmental Improvement project has continued to slow traffic on the eastbound and westbound lanes, but another chapter in the remodeling of the road has been checked off.

Drainage work has continued along the route, with work being completed on Brooksite Drive, which runs perpendicular to 347, this week. Upon its completion, preparation for sidewalk installation and shoulder widening will be performed.

According to Eileen Peters, spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Transportation, next week’s agenda includes water main work on Route 111, as well as drainage work in Route 347’s center median.

“Every single intersection is receiving some sort of safety upgrade, including the new bridge overpass at 25 and 347, from New Highway clear through to the end.”

Workers aim to shift traffic away from the center media. The great majority of tasks being completed are related to drainage and utilities.

“Just like when you build a house, you have to build a foundation,” Peters said. “Of course, this is on a much grander scale.”

The ongoing construction is to transform 15 miles of Route 347 into an environmentally conscious, motor and pedestrian-friendly highway stretching from Hauppauge to Port Jefferson. The one-mile stretch in Hauppauge from the Route 347/454 split to the Route 111 intersection is scheduled to be completed by 2012.
