UPDATE: Man Dies From Injuries in Hauppauge Crash

Douglas Caldwell was critically injured after he struck a tree while driving on Sunday.

The driver who was critically hurt after crashing his vehicle into a tree in Hauppauge March 10 died early Friday morning from severe injuries, Suffolk County police said.

Police said that Douglas Caldwell, 47, of Layne Way, Northport, was driving a 2005 Nissan traveling eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway at 4:10 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and entered the center divider. 

Officers and witnesses attempted to pull Caldwell out of the vehicle, but were unsuccessful. Firefighters from the Commack Fire Department responded and pulled the driver from the car.

The driver was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in critical condition for six days and was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m. Friday, police said.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
