Video: Working in the Heat on Route 347

Construction workers continue work on creating Long Island's greenway despite rising temperatures.

Construction workers from Laborers International Union Local 1298 and Suffolk County Water Authority, continued work on Route 347's reconstruction despite Wednesday's heat.

"It's way too early for this heat," said one of the Suffolk County Water Authority workers, taking a momentary break. "But at least people are working."

With temperatures rising above 90 degrees, workers focused on patching and repaving a section of Route 111 near its intersection with Route 347. New York State Department of Motor Vehicle trucks dumped hot asphalt on the roadway as workers shoveled it and raked it level with the existing road.

"It's a tough job but these guys work hard," said a supervisor on the site, summarizing it in two words as "hot" and "aggravating."

The worker said he and others were making sure to drink a lot of water and taking breaks.
