WATCH: Flag Flown in Afghanistan Raised Over Nesconset Gazebo

Two flags, one from Afghanistan and one flown above the U.S. Capitol, dedicated to the Sept. 11, 2001 memorial.

An American flag flown in Afghanistan was dedicated to the Sept. 11, 2011 memorial at the Nesconset gazebo Tuesday night prior to the kickoff of the free summer concert series.

Rep. Timothy Bishop, D-Southampton, presented an American flag that was flown over U.S. troops in Kabul, Afghanistan on June 23 to add to the existing memorial.

"This flag will fly over the village green to serve as a reminder of the bravery of those who serve with us now, and it will serve as a reminder of those who have given their lives in protecting our freedom," Bishop said.

Nesconset firefighter Steven Siwulec was given the honor of raising the flag, having served tours of duty in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

The memorial consists of a plaque bearing the names of six local residents who died in the Sept. 11 attacks was installed by the Ancient Order of the Hibernians Kevin Barry Chapter, Division 3 in 2008.

In addition, an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol building was presented at the Nesconset gazebo Tuesday night, although it was not raised. The two flags were be alternately flown over the 9/11 memorial at 127 Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset.
