Man Killed Trimming Trees Behind Hauppauge Diner

A man was killed while trimming trees behind a Hauppauge diner on Tuesday morning. 

Nicholas Lourikas, 66, of Centereach, was killed when a tree branch struck him on the head behind the Hauppauge Palace Diner on Route 347 in Hauppauge. 

Fire Tears Through Sheds in Nesconset

Multiple fire departments are currently on the scene of a shed fire in Nesconset. 

The fire tore through four sheds full of woodworking materials next to a home on Tulip Street, said John Martins, 3rd assistant chief with the Nesconset Fire Department. 

Sertino's Now Vacant After 1 Year

Sertinos Cafe took over the former home to Sizzler on West Main Street in Smithtown in August 2011 and doors closed this past October.

The official closing date was Oct. 28.

Nor`easter Piles on Smithtown Town's Hurricane Clean Up

Smithtown officials said the passing nor'easter had a major impact on their efforts to cleanup and recover from Hurricane Sandy's damage.

John Valentine, Smithtown's Director of Emergency Management Services, said the highway department under Superintendent Glenn Jorgensen had to quickly change gears on Wednesday, being pulled away from ongoing Hurricane Sandy recovery to an "ice and snow control mission."

Odd-Even Gas Rationing Begins Friday

Ten days after Hurricane Sandy slammed Long Island, a gas rationing system is set to go into effect Friday at 5 a.m., Nassau and Suffolk county officials have announced.
