Youth Art Showcase
The Smithtown Township Arts Council’s Annual Youth Art Showcase opens February 16 at the Mills Pond House Gallery. Highlighting the creativity of young people in Suffolk County, the exhibit includes artwork created by more than 250 students who have used art to express themselves in a wide variety of creative and exciting ways. Friday, 10 a.m.

Tap a tree, taste some syrup. Native American and colonial techniques for maple sugaring will be demonstrated with real syrup produced for participants to taste. Hoyt Farm, Sunday, 1:30-3 p.m. $3 per person and $8 per family, no registration required.

Next to Normal is a rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt. Its story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening biopolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, etichics in modernpsychiatry, and suburban life. Friday 8 p.m.
