Westbound LIE To Be Closed at Night in Hauppauge

New York State Department of Transportation closes LIE from Exit 57 to Exit 53 for preventative maintenance.

New York State Department of Transportation announced it will be closing portions of Long Island Expressway in Hauppauge at night this week for preventative maintenance.

All the LIE westbound lanes from Exit 57 (Veterans Highway) to Exit 53 (Sagtikos Parkway) will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for approximately one week, weather permitting.

The DOT said the highway closures are for preventative maintenance projects to improve the longevity of the roadway for 175,000 motorists who travel this section of the LIE daily. Eileen Peters, spokeswoman for the DOT, said workers will be cleaning debris out of cracks in the asphalt and filling them with sealants.  The work is weather dependent, and inclement weather such as heavy rain or storms could delay the work.

Peters said motorists should try to avoid the area shortly before its closure at 9 p.m., as traffic backups tend to be the worst as lanes are being shut down. She asked drivers to use alternative routes, to drive carefully through the work zone, follow the posted detour signs, and obey the posted detour speed limit, for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew.

Hauppauge residents may want to consider using Motor Parkway as an alternatives, which weaves along this section of the LIE through Hauppauge, or Route 347 if traveling further to the north.

This is the second time the within the past two months for preventative maintenance. Previous work involved checking the structural integrity of Washington Avenue Bridge.

Peters said DOT is nearing the end of its roadway construction season, and residents should expect to see a number of road closures to prepare highways for the winter.
