UPDATE: Closures Begin, Winter Storm Warning Issue For Hauppauge

National Weather Service forecasters predict 10 - 22 inches of snow.

Hauppauge and other Long Island towns narrowly evaded the snow predicted last week, but get your shovels ready there's more on the way. 

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Hauppuage and the surrounding areas taking effect on 7 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasters call for heavy snowfall with accumulations of 12 - 18 inches or higher on Tuesday. During this time, predictions call for winds from 15 - 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. 

The Opportunity Pre-School, Worker's Compensation Board in Hauppauge have already announced they will be closed on Wednesday.

Drivers are advised to stay off the roadways, as weather is expect to make for dangerous traveling conditions as visibility drops to less than one-quarter mile, according to the NOA. 

The Town of Islip,, is taking precautionary measures and asking residents to keep cars off the street for effective plowing.

"In preparation for the predicted storm, we are spreading brine on our roads today and all day tomorrow. As you probably already know, Islip Town is the first Town in Suffolk County to construct and operate its own brine facility. We use this saltwater mixture on our streets in advance of snow, which helps keep the roads clear," said Town spokeswoman Amy Basta. 

Town of Smithtown officials said it has recently added overnight snow plow crews for around-the-clock coverage. 

If predictions are correct, the storm could top snowfall from the. Suffolk County Police reported no major accidents or fatalities during the storm, but their Expressway and other county roads to clear the way for plows. 

Hauppauge-based Long Island Contractors' Association has released a press statement they are ready with 15 machines on standby to clear local roadways when the storm hits. 

"We want to ensure that residents have a safe and easy commute to work tomorrow morning," said LICA Executive Director Marc Herbst. "Pratt Brothers, Tully Construction and Watral Brothers are among the first to be prepared to lend a hand with the snow clearing efforts in our region as soon as the storm hit."
