Do You Honor Fuel Efficient Parking Spots?

Local businesses have them, and now the Smithtown library has set aside a few parking spaces designated for fuel efficient cars. But do you heed them?

Having a fuel-efficient car will get you farther in between fill-ups, and if it's a hybrid you can even use the HOV lane when it's just you in the car. But now there's preferential parking?

Locals who flocked to the opening of the newly renovated Smithtown Library last week most likely noticed the parking spots that are now reserved for "fuel-efficient" vehicles, a practice you can also find in Lake Grove's Whole Foods lot.

But unlike handicapped parking, you can't be ticked for parking a gas-guzzler in a spot reserved for green cars.

Which begs the question: Do you honor these spaces?

And what do you consider fuel-efficient? Is there a fuel economy rating you think that these cars should fall below?

Let us know in the comments.

Yes. Same as I do the Expectant Mothers spot and the Parent w/ Children spot. When I drive my hybrid, I will park in a Fuel Efficient spot (if there is one since they are not very common) and if I have my other car, I do not. However, my other car specifically states on the window that it is an "ultra low emissions vehicle" so if the spot is for low emissions vehicles, I will park there as well.

Fuel Efficient spots are RIDICULOUS!!! Reserved spots should be for handicapped only!

handicapped spots should be abolished. When did handicapped become defined as "fat, lazy, senior citizen, friends with dr." 99% of the people that use them do not need them!

I honor all spots and I do think there should be a LEGITIMATE reason like KPL is implying that its needed whatever the sign says. Many doctors now (trying to get my father a pass since he is unable to walk 20 feet without falling and is inoperable for his problem) are denying those passes. Its sad because he really needs one, and its becoming as strict as a liquor licence! But why if you are fuel efficient you should have a special spot? Is that another one of those "lets spend Smithtown tax payers yearly gifts" to print up more signs and cause more legislation?
