Question: Should Graduation be Held on Friday?

Hauppauge school officials and Board of Education debate moving day of commencement exercises for 2012.

This Sunday, hundred of Hauppauge families and friends gathered to watch 271 students receive their diplomas at Hauppauge High School's commencement exercises.

Next year, the tradition might be a little different. Superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss brought a proposition before the Board of Education at their June 21 meeting to move the graduation from Sunday to Friday nights, potentially holding the ceremony on Friday evenings.

The superintendent gave multiple reasons for her recommendation from giving families a full weekend to celebrate to increasing student safety by limiting the time between prom and graduation.

Some board members had concerns about students' family members making it home from work or traveling to New York in time to attend a Friday night graduation. One alternative discussed was to move the district's mandatory graduation rehearsal to Friday afternoon.

Our Question of the Day asks: Should graduation be held on Sunday? Would your family be able to attend commencement exercises on a Friday night?

Friday can be problematic for working parents - why is Saturday not an option?

I vote for Saturday. Sunday is an issue for families that are church goers and active members of a congregation. In a lot of churches it's not just about going to service in the morning and your done. There are typically bible studies and small groups meeting at some point that day. If you're a leader, now you have to cancel the entire group because of the graduation.

Sunday is not an issue for thousands of Hauppauge residents, but Saturday is. Not everyone goes to church on Sunday. Not everyone is Christian. Friday night and Saturday are holy days for many. Keep it the way it is, Sunday. Many churches have multiple services.
